**Sofie Royer** Sofie Royer is a multidisciplinary artist with Austro-Iranian roots, trained from a young age in violin and viola at the Vienna Conservatory. After spending several years in the United States –– in that time launching the Boiler Room in Los Angeles –– she returned to Vienna in 2018 to begin her solo music career. She signed with Stones Throw in 2019. Her debut album, Cult Survivor (2020), established a singular lo-fi pop style, marked by retro synthesizers, string arrangements, and a baroque sensibility. In 2022, Harlequin deepened this identity by introducing influences from cabaret, 1980s new wave, and soft rock. The figure of the harlequin and the history of clowning in Europe inspired the theatrical visual presentation of the album. Her latest album, Young-Girl Forever (released November 2024), painted a bold portrait of how it is to be a female artist today –– among the capitalist trappings, existential uncertainties, and constant feeling that you're out of step with society. The album saw her praised by The Guardian as "one of Europe’s most intriguing underrated pop stars, with a captivating voice and an offbeat aristocratic glamour."
